In recognition of the Houston Public Library’s incredible contributions to the Houston community and in recognition of National Library Week, we are pleased to offer complimentary memberships in the Friends of the Houston Public Library to all library employees – the people who make it all happen!
The Friends of the Houston Public Library appreciate your extraordinary efforts over the past several years when, in spite of budget cuts and reduced staffing, you have helped Houstonians apply for jobs, refine their resumes, pursue GEDs, provide a safe environment for children and much more! In addition, of course, you have continued the time-honored tradition of providing activities in the form of books, movies, music, and a wide variety of programming for patrons of all ages.
The Friends is proud to have supported you during the past year by funding staff development and training through paying the registration fees for 47 librarians to attend the Texas Library Association Annual Meeting and also the American Library Association Annual Meeting in California. The Friends also pays for the publication of the link, which connects your library to the community and helps fund materials protection through the RFID project in neighborhood libraries.
In addition, we sponsor a $5,000 scholarship for a library employee who wishes to become a professional librarian through a Master of Library Science program. The HPL employee who most recently completed his degree using our scholarship is Pedro Fonseca, who graduated in 2012 and works at the Kendall Neighborhood Library. In addition, Allen Westrick, our current scholarship recipient, is working on completion of his degree. Applications for the scholarship are being accepted now through May 10.
